Jesus Heals the Servant's Ear

Jesus Restores the Ear of the Servant - by the Master of the Evora Altarpiece 1500

Jesus had been betrayed by Judas, one of his disciples, and the soldiers were about to arrest him. One of his followers, Simon Peter was ready to defend his master.

He said, "Lord shall we attack them with a sword?"

Without waiting for an answer, Peter struck the ear of Malchus, servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear.

Jesus said, "Stop! No more of this." and he touched the servant's ear and restored it.

All four writers of the gospels tell about the servant's ear being cut off, but only Luke, the physician, records the miracle of the restoration of his ear by Jesus.

This is the thirty-fourth recorded miracle of Jesus.

Matthew 26:51

Mark 14:47

Memory Hook

In our memory hook we see Peter cutting off the servant's ear. The young man is moaning and holding his ear in his hand. He has 22 silver buckles tied together to make a lovely belt around his waist. They are headed down the steps into the basement looking for some quick first aid supplies.

At the head or top of the stairs are already 26 big puddles of blood. As I go down the steps I put my hand on the rail where there are 14 more big red spots on the rail. At the foot of the stairs Jesus waits with 18 sharp needles and a large spool of thread to sew the ear back on.

Is this the way it really happened in the Bible! No, of course not, but let this help you remember where this miracle is found in the Gospels.

head+26 = Matthew 26
hand+14 = Mark 14
waist+22 = Luke 22
foot+18 = John 18

(26-14-22-18)

This zip code means the story is found in the 26th chapter of Matthew (26), the 14th chapter of Mark (14), the 22nd chapter of Luke (22) and the 18th chapter of John (18). Actually, only the account in Luke tells that Jesus healed the servant's ear.

(Remember this hook)
  • Head = Matthew
  • Arms = Mark
  • Waist = Luke
  • Feet = John
