FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT was afraid of fire because he had been paralyzed by polio when he was 39 years old. He feared being trapped in a burning building, so he learned to drag himself along the floor with his hands and arms. After he had polio, he was never able to walk again without braces and crutches. He was the only President to serve 3 terms. He was President for 12 years, longer than any other American President.
