The War of the Worlds
The night after a shooting star is seen streaking through the sky from Mars, a cylinder is discovered on Horsell Common near London. At first, naive locals approach the cylinder armed just with a white flag - only to be quickly killed by an all-destroying heat-ray as terrifying tentacled invaders emerge. Soon the whole of human civilization is under threat, as powerful Martians build gigantic killing machines, destroy all in their path with black gas and burning rays, and feast on the warm blood of trapped, still-living human prey. The forces of the Earth, however, may prove harder to beat than they at first appear. The first modern tale of alien invasion, The War of the Worlds remains one of the most influential of all science-fiction works. Part of a brand-new Penguin series of H.G. Wells's works, this edition includes a newly established text, a full biographical essay on Wells, a further reading list and detailed notes. The introduction, by Brian Aldiss, considers the novel's view of religion and society. Paperback, 199 pages.

The Velveteen Rabbit, Or, How Toys Became Real
This is the story of a little boy and his toy rabbit. The rabbit lived in the cupboard with the other toys. Only the skin horse who had been there for many years was friendly to the rabbit. He explained how the boy's father had loved him for many years and that was how he became real. The little boy started sleeping with his velveteen rabbit and after many hugs and kisses the rabbit becomes real to the youngster.

The Swiss Family Robinson, Unabridged
After days of being tossed and battered by a raging storm, the ship on which the narrator, his wife, and their four sons are passengers smashes against a reef - and the last lifeboat pulls away without them. Next morning, the intrepid, loving little family finds itself cast away on an uninhabited island. Never losing hope, they retrieve what they can from the ship and construct a life for themselves through their own resourcefulness - building a treehouse, finding such food as coconuts, sugarcane, honey and potatos, and securing themselves against danger. Adventure follows adventure as they explore the island, encounter wild birds and terrifying animals, plant crops, build sturdier shelters, and settle in for a long stay. Although there are many hardships, the family lives in peace and harmony, and even rescues a girl who herself is a castaway on a nearby island. Recommended for ages 8 to 12.

Swiss Family Robinson Study Guide on CDROM
By Progeny Press
The Swiss Family Robinson follows the Robinsons, a Swiss family journeying to a new life in a far-off colony, as they are shipwrecked and abandoned on an uncharted island. Through their own resourcefulness and the provision of God, they not only survive, but thrive, in their new home. Progeny Press Study Guides provide teachers, parents, and students with literary analysis based upon the foundation of the Bible. Examining well-written literature in relation to biblical standards, students will develop and refine how they deal with man's philosophies while learning about the craft of writing. Progeny Press Study Guides interact with literature as works of art and philosophy as they explain and use literary terms; examine plot construction; dig into character studies; and bring attention to themes and ideas the author has crafted. This interactive CD-ROM contains a full-version study guide .pdf file. Pages can be printed off as needed or students can enter answers directly on the computer and save their work-in-progress; parents can also grade work on the computer, leaving comments and notes within the file. Answers are not automatically graded, as most answers are in essay-form. This CD-ROM includes the study guide .pdf, answer key .pdf, and and ReadMe file; the booklet is not included. Work must be printed out, and cannot be completed on the computer. Grades 7-9.
