Jesus and his disciples are going to the town of Nain. As usual, a large crowd of people are following him. The town is not very big. In fact today the town of Nain is a small town.
As they near the gates of the city, they meet a funeral procession. The only son of a widow has died and they are preparing to bury him. The woman is weeping. Her husband has died and now she has lost her only son.
A crowd of grieving friends are trying to comfort her.
Jesus knows how heart-broken she is and feels sorry for her.
"Don't cry!" he says.
But he can do more than just tell her not to cry. He goes over to the stretcher or stand on which the body lies. The people carrying it stop.
Jesus reaches out and touches the casket.
He says to the dead man, "Young man, I say to you, arise."
To the astonishment of the onlookers the young man sits up and starts talking! Jesus gives him back to his mother. Oh, what joy she feels! Her son's life has been restored!
Those who see what has happened are afraid. They have never seen such a manifestation of power.
They say, "A great prophet has arisen among us and God has visited his people."
Throughout the countryside people start talking about the dead man who has been made alive again. Who is this man who can perform miracles such as this!
This is the eleventh recorded miracle of Jesus.
