Jesus was going down to Jerusalem and as he went, he passed through Samaria and Galilee. Many Jews avoided going through Samaria because they didn't want to contact the Samaritans, a people whom they despised.
As he entered into a certain village he was met by ten men who had the dreaded disease of leprosy. If you had this disease you had to live apart from other people. If someone came near, you had to cry out, "Unclean, unclean!" The Bible tells us these men stood far away from Jesus.
They shouted, "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us."
Jesus' fame had spread throughout the land and these lepers may have heard of the miracles he had been doing.
He told them to go and show themselves to the priests. There were certain things they had to do to be declared free of the disease. If the disease was cured they could return to their families.
As they went, they were healed of their disease. What joy they felt!
One of the men, when he saw he was healed, turned back and with a loud voice praised God. He fell down at Jesus' feet giving him thanks.
This man was a resident of that country, a Samaritan.
Jesus asked him, "Were not ten men cleansed? Where are the other nine?
Only one man, this Samaritan, has returned to give glory to God."
He told the man, "Get up and go, it is your faith that has made you well."
This is the thirty-first recorded miracle of Jesus.
