Peter's Mother-in-Law Healed

Healing of Peter's Mother-in-Law by John Bridges, 1818-1854

Jesus had been to the synagogue and upon leaving he went to the house where Simon Peter and Andrew lived. There was a woman there who was sick with a very high fever. She was Peter's mother-in-law, the mother of Peter's wife. She didn't even feel like getting out of bed and they were so worried about her.

They asked Jesus to do something to help her. He stood over her and told the fever to leave her. And it did! In an instant she was completely well. In fact she felt so well, she got up and started helping with the serving of the guests. What a miraculous and immediate healing!

It was getting near the end of the day and as the sun was setting people began coming to the house bringing their loved ones who were sick and had diseases. They had heard of Jesus' power to heal. He had compassion on the people and healed all who were brought to him.

Not only were sick people brought, but also people who were possessed by evil spirits and devils. Jesus cast out the demons and as they came out of the bodies they began to cry, "You are Christ, the Son of God!" He told them to be quiet because he wasn't ready for people to know he was the Christ who was prophesied to come.

This is the fifth recorded miracle of Jesus.

Memory Hook

In this story there is a black crow which is always hungry and ate 8 corn. The crow is on the mother's head, (so naturally our first scripture is found in Matthew 8). This black crow has a thermometer taped to each of his 8 toes to measure the extremely high fever. Why does it take 8 thermometers? The fever was so high the first seven thermometers broke, but finally the 8th one works. Wow! What a high fever! (If you would like a similar hook, hold up 8 fingers to represent the thermometers. Put all 8 fingers in your mouth at the same time. Try that!)

Now put your arms in a large circle over your chest. This is 1 large snowball to get the fever down quickly. It doesn't get it down quickly, but it does help.

The doctor finally comes and gives her 4 shots in the hip to get the fever under control before she has a heart attack! (Jab 4 fingers on one of your hips. Ouch - Ouch - Ouch - Ouch! That smarts.

head+8 = Matthew 8
chest+1 = Mark 1
hip+4 = Luke 4

This zip code means the account is found in the 8th chapter of Matthew (8), the 1st chapter of Mark (1), and the 4th chapter of Luke (4), but is not found in John (0)

(Remember this hook)
  • Head = Matthew
  • Arms = Mark
  • Waist = Luke
  • Feet = John
