TUTORING

Garden of Praise can help children learn

Government funded tutoring has been in the news lately. Billions of federal dollars are being funneled to private tutoring programs which may or may not be accomplishing the intended goal. Some school administrators believe their teachers can do the job without the tutoring programs.

In 2010 Channel 4 in Dallas did an investigation of a company called Tutors with Computers. This company signs up students with promises of laptops and other gifts and charges $92 an hour. Tutoring companies have fleeced Texas schools out of $200 million dollars in the past five years.

Two years later they are still in business as reported by the Dallas Morning News.

In October 2014 two people who ran tutoring companies in the Dallas/Ft.Worth area pleaded guilty to defrauding the school districts. They had billed the districts about $3.1 million for tutoring that never occurred. They both face up to five years in federal prison and $250,000 in fines. They may also have to pay back the money.

We at Garden of Praise have material available for your use and it won't cost you a dime. Biographies for Kids and Famous Paintings were designed to teach students about famous people and art works while increasing reading comprehension and study skills.

There are more than 100 biographies plus biographies of additional famous artists on the site and each one has enough material for a week. A teacher can use the Birthdates page to plan his or her studies for the year. Some choose birthdates that correspond to the month in which they are teaching.
